Rules for comparisons

Per capire come si trasformano gli aggettivi di due sillabe dobbiamo distinguere tra quelli di origine anglosassone e quelli di origine latina. Dato che delle due modalità di trasformazione degli aggettivi (suffisso –ER o MORE davanti) quella con MORE  è quella che somiglia alla nostra (MORE BEAUTIFUL   =   PIU’ BELLO), evidentemente gli inglesi hanno «ereditato» questa forma e l’hanno utilizzata per gli aggettivi acquisiti nei contatti con le lingue neolatine (principalmente il francese). Per questo gli aggettivi simili all’italiano vengono trasformati con MORE davanti, mentre quelli che non sono immediatamente riconoscibili si trasformano con –ER)

Esempio:

CLEVER                         CLEVERER (più intelligente)

STUPID                         MORE STUPID (più stupido)

Tutti gli aggettivi terminanti in –Y  si trasformano col suffisso

HAPPY      HAPPIER
